Pure ZrO₂ undergoes a destructive monoclinic (m) to tetragonal (t) phase transition during cooling. By doping ZrO₂ with 3mol% Y₂O₃ (3Y-TZP), our engineering team stabilizes the meta-stable tetragonal crystal phase at room temperature. When a micro-crack propagates through YSZ under stress, the stress concentration triggers a localized phase transformation from tetragonal back to monoclinic. This phase transformation is accompanied by a volume expansion of ~3-5%, which actively clamps the micro-crack tip shut—a phenomenon known as Transformation Toughening.
