Aluminium Nitride (AlN) is a covalently bonded hexagonal wurtzite crystal structure (space group P63mc) characterized by strong Al-N bonds, high electrical resistivity, high breakdown voltage, and an extraordinary theoretical thermal conductivity of up to 320 W/m·K at room temperature. In practical industrial manufacturing, realized commercial thermal conductivity ranges between 170 W/m·K and 230 W/m·K, which is roughly 7 to 8 times higher than standard Alumina (Al₂O₃) ceramics.
The primary mechanism of heat conduction in AlN is lattice vibration quanta—phonons. Unlike metals where thermal conduction is dominated by free electrons, phonon-based transport in AlN requires an exceptionally pristine crystal lattice. Oxygen impurities (O²⁻) substituting for nitrogen sites (N³⁻) form aluminum vacancies, which act as dominant phonon scattering centers that sharply diminish thermal conductivity.
